RAMS template free to use, and what to change in it before the gate sees it

A free RAMS template is genuinely useful for one thing: the headings. Scope, site, personnel, plant, access, hazards, controls, sequence, emergency arrangements and the briefing record are the sections a reviewer looks for, and having them in front of you stops the two that are always forgotten being forgotten. What no template supplies is the content, and the gap between a template filled in at a desk and a pack written after a site visit is visible in a paragraph.

What to keep from the RAMS document template

The section headings and the order. A pack that runs scope, people, plant, hazards, sequence, emergencies and briefing reads the way a reviewer reads, and a generic rams pack that follows that order is already halfway to being accepted.

What to replace in a construction RAMS template, every time

The hazard list, the controls, the sequence of work and the emergency arrangements. These are the four that describe this job on this site, and they are the four a template fills with plausible generalities. A construction rams template naming hazards your site does not have is worse than a blank page, because it tells the reviewer you did not look.

What a rams example is actually for

Calibration. Read a good one to see the level of detail expected, then write your own at that level. Copying one and changing the names produces a document that fails on the first specific question, which is usually about access or rescue.

Questions people ask about rams template free

Is a free RAMS health and safety template acceptable to a principal contractor?

The format is; the content decides. Nobody rejects a pack for its layout. They reject it because the sequence does not match the assessment, the rescue plan is missing, or the hazards are somebody else's.

How much should I change for a repeat job?

The site, the access, the people and the sequence, at minimum, plus anything the last job taught you. A repeat job on a different site is a different job, and the version in force should be dated to it.

Can one RAMS pack cover several jobs?

Only where the work and the setting are genuinely the same, and then it still needs a date and a briefing record per job. A pack shared across sites is the version that will be produced after an incident, and it will not hold.
