A work order is the sheet a job is written on: who the customer is, what is to be done, who is doing it, what it will cost and where it stands. Every small service business has one, whether it is a printed pad, a text thread or a whiteboard, and the trouble starts when the sheet, the price and the status live in three different places. The work order this site prices is the job card as the shop floor calls it: labour hours at your rate, parts at your cost with your markup, a trip charge and the tax on the parts line, on the page, from your own figures. Raise it: the customer, the job and the price on one sheet
A work order opens with the customer and the site, then the work to be done and the figures behind the price: the hours, the rate, the parts and the markup. The worksheet on this site prices it; the record in Pro keeps it against the customer with a number and a date.
Work it: who has it, and what changed
Once raised, the order is assigned and its status moves: raised, in progress, done. Extra parts and extra hours land on the same sheet, dated, so the price the customer sees at the end is the sheet's, not a reconstruction from a text thread.
Close it: the invoice reads from the order
A done work order becomes the invoice without re-typing: the same lines, the same total, the deposit already taken shown against the balance. Jobcardo keeps the order and its history; your invoicing tool or your bookkeeper sends the bill.
Work order: common questions
What is the difference between a work order and a job card?
Nothing but the trade's vocabulary. The shop floor and the field call it the job card; the office and the software category call it the work order. Both are the sheet the job is written on, with the customer, the work, the assignee, the price and the status on it.
Is there a free work order template on this site?
Yes. Does Jobcardo send the invoice?
