Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs entered, by the method stated below it. Jobcardo publishes no tax rate, no wage figure and no trade standard: the rate, the markup and the tax on the parts line are yours, and the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own figures.

Some hazards recur on almost every construction job and are worth keeping as prepared starting points, because rewriting them from scratch each time produces worse documents, not better ones. Scaffolding, hot work and the ordinary business of moving around a site are the three that appear most often. Each has a stable core of hazards and controls and a small set of site specific details, and the skill is knowing which parts must be rewritten for this job and which can be carried over.

Scaffolding: erection, inspection and the people underneath

The assessment covers erection and dismantling by competent scaffolders, loading and ties, the inspection regime and its record, edge protection and brick guards, exclusion beneath the work, and what happens when another trade alters it. The last of those causes most incidents and is the one a generic template omits.

Hot work: the welding risk assessment nobody borrows

A welding risk assessment covers fume and extraction, eye and skin protection, the fire risk from sparks and hot metal, screening for others nearby, gas storage and the fire watch after the work stops. The fire watch period and the permit arrangements are site specific, so those two sections are rewritten every time.

Movement: the slips trips and falls risk assessment that earns its keep

A slips trips and falls risk assessment is dismissed as obvious and then describes the hazard that injures most people on sites: trailing leads, stored material in walkways, wet surfaces, changes of level and poor lighting on a winter afternoon. Naming the actual routes and the housekeeping regime is what makes it useful.

Scaffolding risk assessment: common questions

How often must scaffolding be inspected? Before first use, at regular intervals while it remains in use, and after anything that could affect its stability such as high winds or alteration. The inspection record is part of your evidence, so it belongs on the job record rather than on a clipboard in a site office.

Can I reuse a welding risk assessment between jobs? The trade hazards and controls carry over. The fire risk, the surroundings, the permit requirements and the fire watch do not, because they depend entirely on what is next to the work. Reissue with those sections rewritten and dated.

Are slips and trips worth a separate assessment? On a site of any size, yes, because the controls are organisational rather than technical: housekeeping, storage discipline, cable management, lighting and a named owner. Buried inside a larger assessment they get no owner and nothing changes.
