Free risk assessment template: the grid is enough, the hazards have to be yours

Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs entered, by the method stated below it. Jobcardo publishes no tax rate, no wage figure and no trade standard: the rate, the markup and the tax on the parts line are yours, and the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own figures.

A risk assessment template is a grid: hazard, who might be harmed and how, controls already in place, further action needed, who is responsible and by when. Every usable version is a variation on those columns, which is why a free risk assessment template is genuinely enough to start with. What a template cannot give you is the list of hazards that are real on your job, and that list is the only part of the exercise with any value.

Fill a basic risk assessment template from the job, not from the trade

A basic risk assessment template prompts you for hazards. Half of yours will be the obvious trade ones and half will come from this particular site: shared stairs, the family at home, the live supply nobody has isolated, the delivery route across a car park. The second half is the reason the document exists.

Record the controls you will use, not a simple risk assessment template's ideal list

A simple risk assessment template invites a list of ideal controls. Write the ones that will be on the van: the tower rather than the ladder because the tower is booked, the extraction because the cut is indoors. A control nobody has brought is not a control.

Keep the risk assessment templates you use again, and date the ones you issue

Keep a small set of starting points for the work you do most, so the next one takes minutes. But the issued assessment belongs to a job and a date. Where people download risk assessment template files and issue them unchanged, the same undated grid ends up attached to a dozen unrelated jobs.

Free risk assessment template: common questions

Is a free template legally acceptable? There is no approved format. What matters is that the assessment is suitable and sufficient for the work, and that the significant findings are recorded where a record is expected. A free grid, filled in properly, meets that better than an expensive system filled in carelessly.

How many hazards should an assessment list? As many as are significant, and no filler. A short assessment that names the three things that could actually hurt somebody and what is being done about them is stronger than thirty rows of generic entries.

Should the assessment score the risk? Scoring helps you rank and helps a reviewer see your reasoning, but it is not the point. The useful output is the further action column with a name and a date against it, because that is the only column that changes anything.
