Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs entered, by the method stated below it. Jobcardo publishes no tax rate, no wage figure and no trade standard: the rate, the markup and the tax on the parts line are yours, and the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own figures.
Fireproofing is estimated from a schedule rather than from an area. Each structural member carries a required fire resistance rating, and the rating together with the section shape decides the thickness of spray applied material or the dry film thickness of intumescent coating. That is why fireproofing estimating services exist as a specialty: the measurement is a member by member exercise against a schedule, and the price per square foot of surface varies with the thickness the schedule demands rather than with the floor area of the building.

Take off by member and rating, not by floor area
Every column, beam, joist and deck bay is measured for its protected surface and matched to the rating in the schedule. A floor area rate averages across members with different requirements and is wrong on both the light and the heavy end of the same job.
Price the access and the sequence, not only the material
Fireproofing is applied after the frame and before the finishes, so the estimate carries the lift or scaffold access, masking and protection of adjacent work, the number of mobilizations the sequence forces, and the touch-up after other trades damage it. Those lines are frequently the difference between the winning bid and the profitable one.
Record the inspection points in the estimate
Thickness testing, adhesion and cohesion checks and the inspector's sign-off happen at named points. Estimating the time those pauses cost, and recording them on the job record when it is won, is what prevents a crew being demobilized and brought back at your expense.
Fireproofing estimating services: common questions
Why is fireproofing priced per square foot of surface rather than floor area? Because the work is applied to the surface of structural members, and the ratio of protected surface to floor area changes completely with the framing. Two buildings with identical floor plates and different frames can differ substantially in protected surface.
What drives the thickness in the estimate? The required rating, the section factor of the member, and the material being used. The schedule from the engineer or the fire strategy sets the rating; the manufacturer's tables convert that into a thickness for each member type.
What is most often missed on a fireproofing estimate? Protection of adjacent finished work, repair after following trades, and the second mobilization that almost every program forces. Each is predictable, and each is routinely left out and then absorbed.
