Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs entered, by the method stated below it. Jobcardo publishes no tax rate, no wage figure and no trade standard: the rate, the markup and the tax on the parts line are yours, and the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own figures.

Some jobs are a morning and some run for weeks, and the long ones stop behaving like work orders. They have a programme of visits rather than a date, subcontractors working under them, costs accumulating against a budget nobody looks at until the end, and a completion that has to be evidenced before the last payment is released. This section is the long job: the plan, what each week actually produced, and the record that closes it.

Plan the visits, not the hours

A long job is a sequence of visits with dependencies between them: the second fix cannot start until the inspection passes, and the inspection is somebody else's diary. Planning at visit grain is what makes the programme real; planning in total hours produces a number that is never wrong and never useful.

Record what each week produced

Units of completed work against crew days on the job, in the same units the estimate priced. That is production tracking, and on a long job it is the earliest honest signal that the programme is slipping, weeks before the calendar shows it and while the sequence can still be changed.

Close it on evidence, not on a phone call

The completion of a long job is a punch list closed, the as-built record handed over, the final claim submitted and the retention balance recorded. All four live on the same job record as the estimate it started from, which is what makes the last payment a process rather than a negotiation.

Projects: construction production tracking: common questions

When does a work order become a project? When it needs a programme rather than a date, or when more than one trade has to be sequenced. In practice a job that spans more than a couple of visits and involves somebody else's schedule is already a project, whatever the paperwork calls it.

What is construction production tracking? Counting completed units of work against the crew time spent, week by week, in the units the estimate priced. It answers whether the job is producing at the rate it was priced at, which a percentage-complete guess never does.

Does a small firm need project software as well as job cards? Not a separate product. What it needs is the long job held as one record: the visits planned, the weekly production recorded, the costs posted and the completion evidenced, all on the same card the estimate and the invoices sit on.
