Every figure on this page is computed from the inputs entered, by the method stated below it. Jobcardo publishes no tax rate, no wage figure and no trade standard: the rate, the markup and the tax on the parts line are yours, and the defaults are a worked example to replace with your own figures.

The markup is what turns a cost into a price, and the margin is what is left after the job; a contractor who confuses the two under-prices every job by the difference. Jobcardo carries the markup on every line of the estimate, labour and material separately, shows the margin the job will make at that price, and keeps the actual costs against the job once it is done, so the next estimate for the same kind of work starts from what the last one really cost.

Markup on the line, margin on the job

Each line carries its cost and its markup; the job carries the margin those lines add up to. A markup of a quarter on cost is a margin of a fifth on the price, and the record shows both so the price is set on the number that matters.

Your book, by trade and by kind of work

A service call and an install are marked up differently, and materials differently from labour. The book holds a markup per kind of work and per trade on this product, so the estimate applies the right one without anyone remembering it.

Actual against estimate

Hours worked and materials used go on the job as it runs; done compares them with the estimate line by line and shows the margin the job actually made. The estimate template and the free calculators use the same arithmetic with no account.

Estimate template: common questions

Does the markup include overhead? The markup is yours to set, and the worked example shows how an overhead recovery is built into it: overhead as a share of expected billable cost, then profit on top. The record keeps the two apart so the margin reads true.

Can I mark up materials and labour differently? Yes. Every line carries its own markup, and the book holds a default per kind of line, so material at one rate and labour at another is the normal case rather than an exception.

Is this priced separately? No. Markup and margin are part of every trade's plan on the pricing page; a trade pays its own price and the margin view comes with it.
